On the morning of May 26, Zhuang Biaozhong , professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics faculty in Zhejiang University delivered an academic report titled “Mechanics Innovative Applications and Earthquake Prevention Technology” to our institute on invitation. Over 300 teachers and students of related faculties, including disaster prevention faculty and science of earthquake faculty attended the report.

Professor Zhuang started with the relationship between mechanics innovation and earthquake prevention technology. He set Ya’an Hospital in the 7.0-magnitude strong earthquake happening on April 20 in Sichuan Lushan as an example. With the help of videos, animation and pictures, the close relationship between mechanics and earthquake prevention technology was vividly illustrated. He also pointed out that anti-seismic houses should not collapse in great earthquakes. On the contrary, the buildings should be repairable in middle seisms and intact in small seisms. Besides, Professor Zhuang also demonstrated a series of interesting experiments like balance crane, apple peering machine and magic Chinese ring., which were to emphasize the importance of basic theoretical knowledge and innovative capability.

Professor Zhuang’s speech was simple but profound with various references. His presentation was not only theoretical and practical, but also amusing, which aroused students’ interest and won rapturous applause of present attendants. After the speech, Professor Zhuang also chatted with teachers and students present and answered their questions carefully, which deeply inspired and greatly benefited them.
